Burma Freedom Petition

To respond to the brutal attack by the totalitarian military regime (SPDC) of General Than Shwe, on Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and other NLD party leaders and supporters on May 30th, and

To address the regime's ongoing human rights abuses against ethnic minorities, democracy activists, and the general population of Burma, and

To confront the regime's refusal for 13 years to discuss the transfer of power to the parliament which was democratically elected in 1990,

The U.S. government should promptly take the following effective actions:

1). Secure the release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and her supporters immediately.

2). Act to bring all persons responsible for the recent violent attacks on Aung San Suu Kyi and her party to justice immediately.

3). Secure the reopening of NLD headquarters and other party offices all over Burma immediately.

4). Secure the release of all political prisoners who have been unjustly detained immediately.

5). Deny the regime income by banning all imports from military owned or controlled companies in Burma immediately.

6). Extend the visa ban to all members and associates of the regime, and freeze their assets immediately.

7). Denounce the regime in all international fora, deny them access to any international financial and technical support, and urge all trading partners to adopt similar sanctions on the regime, immediately

8). Ask the UN Security Council to intervene to remove the regime and establish a democratic civilian government in Burma, should other methods fail to do so.
