NLD calling for the formation of a People's Parliament
The National League for Democracy on the Union Day (12th February, 2006), which is one of the auspicious days of the history of the country, with the frank and honest intention and stressing for the benefit of the country and the people, issued a special statement calling for the formation of a People's Parliament to proclaim the State Peace and Development Council as a legitimate ruling council.

Junta threatens to dissolve NLD
Information Minister Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan on April 26 accused the National League for Democracy of having links with terrorist groups and exiled dissident organizations. The minister also turned down an NLD proposal to convene a parliament with the winners of 1990 elections, in turn for recognition of the junta as a de jure government.

Myanmar's junta goes for the kill
Myanmar's military rulers have launched a major new crackdown on the country's main opposition National League for Democracy (NLD) party, fueling widespread speculation that the hardline State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) intends to eliminate its harassed and beleaguered rival completely within the next 12 months.

Can NLD tide over current crackdown?
Burma’s main opposition parties, NLD and SNLD are facing more crackdowns and pressures from the authorities nowadays. Party members are reportedly forced to resign and some are said to be bribed.

A SENSE OF ASIA, Burma madness: The psychomystery continues
For a half century nobody has paid much attention to Burma. Even geographers yawned when the thugs running the place renamed it Myanmar. It’s not that Burma couldn’t be important.
Conditions in Burma
As a result of the Burmese military regime's blatant disregard for human rights, its intolerance of dissent, and its ongoing efforts to perpetuate military rule, prospects for meaningful political change and reform continued to decline over the past six months. [full text of report]

NOW!

Uneasy lies the crown in Myanmar
As Myanmar's reclusive ruling military junta moves toward more isolationism, its senior generals are moving to re-establish something akin to the country's long-abolished monarchy to shore up their lagging legitimacy. As the new palace walls go up, the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) has stepped up its persecution of foreign organizations operating in the country.

BURMA Freedom Supporters TO RALLY outside of San Francisco Federal Building/House Democratic Leader Office calling FOR US Immediate and effective actions against On Going crackdown on Aung San Suu Kyi, NLD and opposition forces in Burma.

Why:
Concerned Burma freedom activists rally outside of San Francisco Federal Building marking the 16th anniversary of the 1990 Burma’s general election in which Aung San Suu Kyi’s party, National League for Democracy (NLD) won a land slide victory. Instead of power being handed over, Suu Kyi and her party have been repeatedly harassed, attacked, and leaders were rendered incommunicado for years. On May 30, 2003, the regime ambushed her envoy and kidnapped her/followers – the incident was known as Depeyin Massacre in which hundreds were killed. The world has not heard from her since then nor has it known her true condition. Now, far from releasing her, the regime is even threatening to outlaw her party, the election-winning NLD. Some fear for her life. Join us in calling for the U.S. and U.N. to take immediate and effective measures to stop the ongoing crackdown on Suu Kyi, her party (the NLD), and all other opposition forces in Burma.

When: Friday, May 26, 2006, 11:30 am - 1:30 pm.

Where: Front Plaza at San Francisco Federal Building; 450 Golden Gate Ave., San Francisco, CA 94102;

Who: Burma Freedom Activists and supporters, groups and organizations working towards the Democracy and Human Rights development in Burma.

Speakers: Speakers from Bay Area Burma groups, Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, Representatives from Senators and Congressmen offices to read their statements.

Please call your representatives and urge them to support the:

Points to include in your call:

  • On this day in 1990, people of Burma overwhelming chosen the Natinal League for Democracy led by Aung San Suu Kyi to rule the country. The regime continue to define the people's will by cracking down on NLD and all oppositions in Burma.
  • You are extremely concerned about Aung San Suu Kyi's whereabouts, her health, and that of her supporters. The world has not heard from her since the May-2003 attack and kidnapping of her nor has it known her true condition; and you fear for her life.
  • After years of crack down on Su Kyi, NLD and other oppositions parties without any resistance nor interference from the world community, the regime is now going for the kill. NLD members were forced to resign all over Burma, and the regime is now threading to outlaw NLD. Without NLD, there will be no democracy in Burma.
  • It is more clear than ever that Than Shwe's regime has absolutely no intention of entering into political dialogue with Aung San Suu Kyi and her party. The regime has repeatedly ignored NLD's offer of reconciliation to recognize it provided the regime allows to convene 1990 parliament and take measures towards democracy. Regime has no intension for reform towards democracy.
  • You are greatly concerned with the ever worsening humanitarian crisis in Burma. Not only people are suffering from brutal repression and great many forms of human rights violations, poverty and lack of livelihood;  HIV epidemic - which is spreading quickly and killing thousands, is never under control nor recognized by the regime.
  • The crack down of ethnic minorities are at its optimal. A detained Shan ethnic leader was recently died in prison, and the regime forces rooted out more than 11000 Karen villagers in Burma. They need urgent help.
  • The Congress and Bush Administration must respond strongly and quickly to this grave situation in Burma. The U.S. must  seek the United Nations Security Council's action on Burma to stop the ongoing crack down and ensure reform towards democracy.
